Reimagining Education: When Students Feel Stuck—How Do We Help Them Move?

By Dr. Michael Arrington

There’s a student sitting in a classroom right now…

Head down.

Work incomplete.

Disconnected.

Not because they can’t succeed.

Not because they don’t have potential.

But because somewhere along the way… they got stuck.

And when students get stuck, it doesn’t always look like struggle.

Sometimes it looks like:

  • Apathy

  • Silence

  • “I don’t care” attitudes

  • Missing assignments

  • Avoidance

But let’s be clear—“I don’t care” is often code for something deeper.

It might mean:

  • “I don’t think I can do this.”

  • “I’ve already failed too many times.”

  • “No one sees me anyway.”

  • “Why try if it won’t matter?”

Stuck Is Not the Same as Lost

One of the most important truths we can share with students is this:

Being stuck is temporary. It is not your identity.

You are not your GPA.

You are not your last mistake.

You are not your current level of motivation.

You are in progress.

Growth doesn’t always look like straight A’s and perfect attendance.

Sometimes growth looks like:

  • Showing up when you didn’t want to

  • Trying again after failing

  • Asking for help

  • Completing one assignment when you used to complete none

Those are wins.

And they matter.

The First Step Forward Is Small

If you feel stuck, don’t focus on everything.

Focus on one thing.

  • One assignment

  • One conversation

  • One class

  • One moment of effort

Momentum doesn’t come from giant leaps.

It comes from small, consistent movement.

And once you move… even a little… something powerful happens:

You begin to believe again.

You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

There are people on your campus who see you—even when you think they don’t.

Educators.

Counselors.

Support staff.

Coaches.

There are adults who wake up every day committed to helping students find their way—not just academically, but emotionally and personally.

These educators:

  • Stay after school to help you understand the lesson

  • Check in when you’ve been quiet

  • Push you because they believe in you

  • Celebrate small victories that others might miss

They don’t give up on you.

Even when you’ve started to give up on yourself.

That matters more than you know.

To the Students Who Feel Stuck…

Hear this clearly:

You are not behind.

You are not finished.

You are not out of chances.

You are one decision away from changing your direction.

Not your entire life—just your direction.

Start small.

Ask for help.

Turn something in.

Show up differently tomorrow.

Because the truth is:

Your story is still being written.

And this chapter?

This is not where it ends.

Call to Action: Your Move Starts Now

Before you close this page, ask yourself:

👉 What is one thing I can do today to move forward?

Then do it.

Not tomorrow.

Not next week.

Today.

Because progress doesn’t wait for perfect conditions.

It starts with a decision.
